Officially known as the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine with Polestar Performance Optimisation, this mid-size luxury SUV is not exactly the 600 PS (592 horsepower) monster we talked about last week.
Nevertheless, it’s the most powerful sport utility vehicle ever made by Volvo. As the name implies, the Polestar skunkworks didn’t do much more than to make small adjustments to the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain.
According to Polestar’s chief operating officer, Niels Möller, the changes will “give customers who want a new level of driving pleasure with their XC90 an easily accessible and attractive performance increase”.
The Swedish car maker says that despite the increased performance, fuel economy remains at 2.1L/100km. Also unchanged is the T8’s 43 kilometres of pure-electric range.
Along with the engine upgrade, Polestar has also tweaked the SUV’s throttle response and revised the gear-holding function to stay in the current gear when the driver is tackling a corner at high lateral g-forces.
