Datsun in India have had a rocky start. Although the GO and its inherent platform is great, the overall appeal of both the Datsun products have been far from impressive mainly because of the barebones interior and the simple exterior design. Now though, Datsun will be showcasing a brand new hatchback which will aim at wooing the Indian and global audiences. Incidentally, this new unveil on April 14 will also be the global unveil for this new car.
The Datsun Redigo or I2 as it is internally known is based on the same compact and low cost CMF-A platform that underpins the Renault Kwid. The Redigo, like the Kwid is an SUV-themed crossover vehicle that fits under four metres but packs a tall and butch design along with generous ground clearance.
The small compact hatchback will sit below the GO and will be based on the new CMF-A platform. It will feature SUV-like looks and will have a high ground clearance. This has been proved in the spy picture which shows that the car has good clearance and crossover-like styling just like its sister car, the Renault Kwid. The tyres on the car also look similar to the ones on the Kwid. Some styling cues are expected to be taken from the concept car.
The Datsun Redi-Go will share lots of features and components from the Kwid. Powering the hatchback will be the same 800cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that is capable of producing 54bhp of power and 72Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. It will be manufactured at the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s production plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu.
