Set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the all-new i3S features an upgraded electric motor that reportedly produces 184 hp (137 kW) and 199 lb-ft (269 Nm) of torque – an increase of 14 hp (10 kW) and 15 lb-ft (20 Nm).
Now, from the outside, the newly facelifted BMW i3 looks better than before. It looks more premium and more mature. Having said that, it’s a bit lackluster in terms of an upgrade. Maybe my expectations were too high but I was hoping for something a bit more exciting. However, if you think the outside is lacking in new visual drama, the inside will disappoint.
So the extra 14 hp and 15 lb-ft over the standard car actually provide some extra performance. That 60 mph time is good enough to take on cars like the Volkswagen Golf, which is impressive for a little EV.
The i3s marks the first time BMW has introduced a performance-enhanced version of the i-family vehicle and paves the way for a similar move with the i8 sports car, which was launched a year after its i3 sibling.
